How Gemini and Google AI Mode Find Magento Products (2026)

Gemini and Google AI Mode find products from Google’s own data, not from a separate AI crawler. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built from the normal Googlebot index. Product results lean on the Shopping Graph, which is built mainly from Merchant Center feeds, with schema.org markup on your pages as a supporting source. So for a Magento store, Google visibility in AI starts with the same things as Google Shopping: a clean feed and correct product data.

Checked on 7 October 2026. Google changes these surfaces often – check Google’s documentation before you rely on a detail here.

Where Google’s AI gets your product data

Source Used for What you control on Magento
Googlebot index AI Overviews and AI Mode answers and links Crawlable, server-rendered pages; do not block Googlebot
Merchant Center feed The Shopping Graph: products, prices, stock A product feed with correct price, availability and identifiers
Product JSON-LD Supports the Shopping Graph and merchant listings Product + Offer with availability, GTIN, shipping and returns
UCP profile Agentic checkout on Google surfaces (Universal Cart, US rollout since May 2026) A profile at /.well-known/ucp that advertises only what you serve

Three things people get wrong

  • Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews. It is a robots.txt token, not a crawler. It controls whether Google may use your content to train Gemini and to ground answers in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. Blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. See Google-Extended.
  • llms.txt does not help Google. Google has said Search ignores it.
  • FAQ markup earns nothing in Google Search. FAQ rich results stopped on 7 May 2026. Keep visible Q&A for people; see FAQPage after May 2026.

Checklist for a Magento store

  1. Keep Googlebot allowed and your product pages server-rendered. Blocking Googlebot removes you from Search and its AI features at once.
  2. Send a Merchant Center feed. Magento has no built-in feed for it, so use an extension, your PIM or a feed provider. Keep price and stock the same as on the page.
  3. Complete your Product JSON-LD: offers.availability as a full URL, sku, brand, GTIN, and shipping and return policy. Hyvä and Luma do not emit all of these. See return and shipping schema and what Hyvä emits.
  4. Decide about Google-Extended on purpose. Most stores leave it allowed so Gemini can ground answers in their pages.
  5. Check the Search generative AI setting in Search Console. Since 31 August 2026 every site can exclude itself from AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover. Include is the default. See how to control AI Overviews.
  6. If you sell in the US, consider a UCP profile – but only for capabilities you actually serve. See the UCP readiness checklist.

How to measure it

  • Search Console generative AI report – impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. No clicks and no queries.
  • GA4 AI Assistant channel – since 13 May 2026, visits from recognised assistants, including Gemini (gemini.google.com). AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count as Organic Search, not AI Assistant. See GA4 AI Assistant channel.
  • Fixed prompts in Gemini, run more than once, to see if you are named. See AI share of voice.

Questions

How does Gemini find products? From Google’s own data: the Googlebot index and the Shopping Graph, which is built mainly from Merchant Center feeds and supported by schema.org markup.

Do I need a separate feed for Gemini? No separate Gemini feed. Merchant Center is the feed Google’s shopping surfaces use. ChatGPT uses a different one, the ACP feed.

Can I block Gemini but stay in Google Search? You can block Gemini training and grounding with Google-Extended. That does not affect Search, AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Does this guarantee Gemini will recommend my store? No. It removes the technical reasons you get left out. Price, reviews and what other sites say still matter.
