How to Control AI Overviews and AI Mode on a Magento Store

Since 31 August 2026 every site can remove itself from Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover with one setting in Search Console. It works for the whole property. For parts of a page, the tools are data-nosnippet, max-snippet and nosnippet, which Magento can set in templates and layout XML. Google-Extended is not one of these tools.

In one sentence

One Search Console switch for the whole site, page-level robots rules for the rest – and Google-Extended does neither.

The four ways to control Google’s AI features

ControlScopeEffect on AI featuresSide effect
Search generative AI setting in Search ConsoleWhole property (a child property can differ)Out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover – as links and for groundingNone on regular results, per Google
data-nosnippet on an HTML elementPart of a pageThat text is not used in snippets or AI answersAlso hidden from the normal snippet
max-snippet / nosnippet robots metaOne pageLimits or blocks text used in AI featuresAlso limits the normal snippet
noindexOne pageOut of Search and its AI featuresOut of Search entirely
What does not work

Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. It controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built from the normal Googlebot index. Blocking Googlebot removes you from Search itself.

The Search Console setting

Since 31 August 2026 every site has Settings → Search generative AI in Search Console. There are two choices: include (the default) or exclude your links and content from Google’s generative AI features. Google says excluded sites get no traffic or impressions from those features, and that the setting is not used as a ranking signal for other results. The same rollout added a generative AI performance report with impressions, pages, countries and devices – but no clicks and no queries.

It is all or nothing for the property. There is no page-level switch in Search Console yet.

Page-level control on Magento 2

Hide part of a page: data-nosnippet

Add the attribute in the template of the block you want kept out – for example supplier text, internal notes or a review widget:

<div class="product attribute description" data-nosnippet>
    <?= $block->getProduct()->getDescription() ?>
</div>

It works on div, span and section elements. The text is still indexed; it is only not quoted.

Limit a whole page type: robots meta in layout XML

Magento sets one default robots value under Content → Design → Configuration. For one page type, add a meta tag in layout XML, for example for all product pages:

<!-- app/design/frontend/Vendor/theme/Magento_Catalog/layout/catalog_product_view.xml -->
<page>
  <head>
    <meta name="robots" content="index,follow,max-snippet:160"/>
  </head>
</page>

Magento has no per-product robots field out of the box; that needs an extension or a custom attribute.

Or send a header

# nginx: product feed exports stay out of Search and its AI features
location ~* ^/media/feeds/ { add_header X-Robots-Tag "noindex"; }

Should a store opt out?

Usually not. For most shops AI Overviews and AI Mode are a discovery channel, and opting out removes you from it without any benefit in regular rankings. Opt out when there is a concrete reason – licensed content, pricing you do not want summarized, or a legal requirement – and watch the generative AI report before and after. Page-level tools are the better fit when only some content is the problem.

Questions

How do I remove my site from AI Overviews?
In Search Console, open Settings, then Search generative AI, and choose to exclude your site. It applies to AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover for the whole property.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. AI Overviews and AI Mode use the normal Googlebot index.
Does opting out hurt my normal Google rankings?
Google says the Search generative AI setting is not used as a ranking signal for results outside its generative AI features.
Can I block only some pages or parts of a page?
Not in the Search Console setting. On the page, use data-nosnippet for parts of it, or nosnippet and max-snippet for the whole page – these also affect the normal snippet.
What does the generative AI report in Search Console show?
Impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It has no click data and no queries.
