# Commerce Agent - Definition

**TL;DR:** A commerce agent is AI software that uses a business's real commerce data - catalogue, cart, orders, stock - to help a shopper decide and buy, or to help a merchant run the store. There are two kinds: **shopping agents** for customers and **merchant agents** for staff. A commerce agent is not the same as [agentic checkout](https://angeo.dev/agentic-checkout-definition/), which is only the step where a purchase is completed.

## What is a commerce agent?

A commerce agent is AI software that acts on a business's commerce systems - its catalogue, cart, order and back-office data - through defined tools, to help a shopper find and buy products or to help a merchant operate the store, within limits the business sets.

Three things make it an agent and not a chatbot:

- **It calls tools.** It searches the live catalogue, reads stock, changes a cart or looks up an order. It does not answer from a script.

- **It works in steps.** One request ("a tent, a sleeping bag and a stove for two kids") can become several searches, a comparison and a cart.

- **It has limits.** Prices come only from catalogue data, carts have caps, and some actions need a person to approve them.

## What are the two types of commerce agent?

| | Shopping agent | Merchant agent |

| Who uses it | Customers | Store staff |

| Typical jobs | Search and compare, plan a basket, fill the cart, answer order and return questions, remember preferences | Explain sales, flag stock problems, suggest prices and promotions, draft campaigns, fix listings |

| What it may change | The cart only. Payment happens in the store's checkout. | Nothing directly. Changes are staged and wait for a person to approve them. |

| Main risk | Quoting a price or product that does not exist | Changing live prices or stock without review |

This split follows Anthropic's open [commerce agents blueprint](https://github.com/anthropics/commerce-agents), published on 2 September 2026, which ships one agent of each type.

## Where does a commerce agent run?

People use "commerce agent" for three different setups. They are easy to confuse, so it helps to separate them by *who owns the agent*.

| | Agent on the store's site or app | Agent inside an AI assistant | Agentic checkout |

| Owned by | The merchant | The assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) | A protocol between agent, merchant and payment provider |

| Acts for | The merchant's customer, on the merchant's terms | The user, across many stores | Completing one purchase |

| Reads the store through | Direct backend access to catalogue, cart and orders | Crawling, [product feeds](https://angeo.dev/acp-product-feed-definition/), apps or MCP connectors | Checkout and payment endpoints |

| Where the purchase completes | The store's own checkout | Usually the store's site; sometimes an app | Wherever the protocol says |

| Example | An agent built from Anthropic's blueprint on a retailer's app | ChatGPT shopping; Walmart's app inside ChatGPT | ACP, UCP or AP2 flows; MCP checkout tools |

Agentic checkout is not a third kind of agent. It is a step that either of the first two can use. See [Agentic checkout - definition](https://angeo.dev/agentic-checkout-definition/).

## What is a commerce agent not?

- **Not a chatbot with a product FAQ.** A chatbot answers from text. A commerce agent calls tools against live data.

- **Not a checkout.** Well-designed agents hand the cart to the store's checkout. Anthropic's blueprint, for example, places no orders and takes no payments.

- **Not a guarantee of sales.** An agent helps people decide. Whether they buy still depends on price, stock, trust and the checkout itself.

## What must a commerce agent guarantee?

The controls that matter most, as described in Anthropic's blueprint and its `docs/safety.md`:

- **Grounding:** prices and products come only from catalogue data returned in the session.

- **Hard limits:** caps on cart quantities and on refund authority; anything above them goes to a person.

- **Human approval:** merchant-agent changes are staged, not applied.

- **Credentials stay out of the model:** tokens and cart ids live on the server; the model sees only results.

- **No manipulation:** no invented urgency or pushy upsell patterns.

## Where do commerce agents stand in 2026?

- **Assistants moved to discovery.** In March 2026 OpenAI stepped back from checkout inside ChatGPT. People discover products in ChatGPT and buy on the merchant's site. Larger merchants can build an app, as Walmart did. ([OpenAI, 24 March 2026](https://openai.com/index/powering-product-discovery-in-chatgpt/))

- **Merchant-owned agents got a blueprint.** In September 2026 Anthropic published an open reference for shopping and merchant agents, with Shopify, Visa, Mastercard and Accenture named as partners. ([Anthropic, 2 September 2026](https://claude.com/blog/claude-for-commerce-agents))

- **Results are mostly vendor-reported.** Anthropic reports carts up to 35% larger and shoppers 60% more likely to buy with Claude-based shopping agents. No method is published, so treat these as claims.

## Can a Magento store have a commerce agent?

Yes, but Magento ships none of the parts. A Magento commerce agent is assembled from:

- **Catalogue tools** an agent can call - for example an MCP server such as [angeo/module-mcp-server](https://angeo.dev/modules/mcp-server/).

- **Cart tools with limits enforced in Magento** - for example [angeo/module-mcp-checkout](https://angeo.dev/modules/mcp-checkout/).

- **A backend adapter** for the agent framework you use - for Anthropic's blueprint, a Magento implementation of its `StorefrontBackend` interface.

- **A checkout handoff** that moves the agent's cart into Magento's own checkout.

**What we don't know.** How much commerce agents raise conversion on mid-size stores - public figures come from large retailers and vendors. Whether shoppers prefer an agent on the store's own site or inside an assistant. How fast agent frameworks will change: Anthropic's blueprint is a reference that is not maintained.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a commerce agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers from scripts or FAQ text. A commerce agent calls tools against live data - it searches the catalogue, reads stock, changes the cart and looks up orders - and works through several steps to finish a task.

### What is the difference between a shopping agent and a merchant agent?

A shopping agent helps customers find, compare and buy, and may change only the cart. A merchant agent helps store staff with sales, stock, pricing and campaigns, and stages every change for a person to approve.

### Is a commerce agent the same as agentic checkout?

No. A commerce agent helps someone decide and act across many steps. Agentic checkout is only the step where a purchase is completed through a protocol such as ACP, UCP or AP2.

### Does a commerce agent place orders?

It depends on the design. Many hand the cart to the store's own checkout, and Anthropic's blueprint places no orders and takes no payments. Some setups, such as MCP checkout tools, can place an order within limits enforced by the store.

### Is ChatGPT a commerce agent?

ChatGPT acts as a shopping assistant for the user: it discovers and compares products from crawled pages and merchant feeds. Since March 2026 the purchase usually completes on the merchant's own site, not inside ChatGPT.

### Can Magento run a commerce agent?

Yes, but Magento does not include one. You need catalogue and cart tools an agent can call, a backend adapter for the agent framework, and a handoff into Magento's own checkout.
